Milford Sound road clearing work delayed

11:22 am on 17 October 2012

Bad weather and the difficulty of clearing huge rocks have delayed the reopening of the road into Milford Sound in Fiordland.

The only road in and out of Milford was blocked by hundreds of tonnes of rocks brought down by a major landslide overnight on Friday.

Transport Agency Southland area manager Peter Robinson says it has taken longer to drill and blast the rocks than expected, and bad weather has also dogged progress.

He says workers will continue to chip away at an alternative route beside the slip so vehicles can safely travel to and from Milford Sound. The agency expects the road to open on Thursday.
