Strong winds cause power cuts in parts of North Island

Strong winds that have lashed parts of the North Island since yesterday have caused multiple power cuts in Taranaki, Wanganui, Manawatu, Wairarapa and Bay of Plenty.

The winds broke branches and tore down trees, bringing powerlines down with them.

The Powerco network operations manager, Phil Marsh, says extensive tree removal and line work is being done by contractors to restore power supply in some areas where it has been off since Thursday.
