A specialist in Treaty of Waitangi settlement negotiations is urging Maori to be cautious when considering a proposal to allow iwi to buy into the partial privatisation of state-owned enterprises.

The Government has offered iwi in negotiations over Treaty claims the option of taking some of the value of their future settlement early as shares in one or more of the SOEs.

Baden Vertongen, a senior associate at Kensington Swan, says the proposal comes with fish hooks that need to be carefully read through.

Mr Vertongen says iwi should accept the funding the Government is offering to help them weigh up their options.
