Police say it is too early to decide whether criminal charges will be laid against the driver of a boat that ran over and killed a nine-year-old girl on Lake Taupo.
The girl died after being struck by another boat while water-skiiing behind her family's boat about 9.50am on Tuesday.
The family were on holiday in the area.
The Maritime Safety Authority has been notified.
Deadly collision on Kawarau River
Two people have been confirmed dead after a jetboat and jetski collided on the Kawarau River near Queenstown.
Police on Tuesday recovered the bodies of two Queenstown men who were thrown from the jetboat.
They were Anton Woitasek, 34, and Lawrence Singleton, 51.
The incident happened about 7.30pm on Monday.
A man and woman on the jetski were airlifted to Dunedin hospital. One is in critical condition, while the other is in a stable condition.
Maritime New Zealand says the jetboat drivers were not wearing lifejackets, and initial witness reports suggest one of the vessels was going the wrong way down the river.
Diving fatality
Meanwhile, a 45-year-old man from Kaeo died after a diving accident in the Far North on Monday.
The Whangaroa Coastguard says it was alerted by a passing vessel to a diver who was in trouble.
The Coastguard says an ambulance and doctor met the boat when it arrived back. The man was given oxygen and CPR, but could not be revived.
He had been diving near the Whangaroa Big Gamefish Club headquarters.
