Dominion Rd to get $47m upgrade

Auckland Transport has signed off on multi-million dollar plans to upgrade one of Auckland's busiest streets, Dominion Road.

The $47 million upgrade will allow bus lanes to be extended, cycle routes created on neighbouring streets, and provide for a spruce-up of the village centres.

On Wednesday Auckland Transport decided that widening the street would cost too much, and agreed to keep the carparks.

It wants to join the bus lanes so they are continuous lanes through intersections to allow more buses to use the road.

Local retailers say it is good for business, but the Campaign for Better Transport says cyclists have lost out as they will not get their own lane on Dominion Road, as previously proposed.
