Adult passport fees reduced

5:54 pm on 31 October 2012

The Government has reduced fees for passports and launched a website where people can apply for them online.

At present, it costs $153.30 to get a new adult passport (standard service), but from Friday people will only pay $140 for a first time application or $134.50 to renew it.

People can get a $10 discount if they apply using the online service.

Internal Affairs Minister Chris Tremain says the reduction will be paid for out of a $27 million surplus the department has accumulated since shortening the expiry for passports from 10 to five years.

Fees for child passports are unchanged at $81.70.

Urgent and after-hours service fees for passports are also unchanged.
