Witnesses say a 10 metre launch was picked up by a waterspout on Wednesday night near Great Barrier Island.
Described as a "screaming wall of wind", the funnel entered Smokehouse Bay just before 11pm, lifting the vessel out of the water and throwing it on its side.
Two people on board suffered only cuts and bruises from the incident. The launch also escaped serious damage.
