NZ help for Timor almost at end

7:56 pm on 5 November 2012

New Zealand's on-and-off-again commitment to East Timor ends for good this week.

New Zealand troops were sent there as part of a United Nations mission after a vote for independence in 1999.

They returned with troops from Australia, Malaysia and Portugal when civil strife broke out in 2006.

Last week, East Timor's politicians paid tribute to the help they received from New Zealand and formally declared it was no longer needed.

New Zealanders stopped doing patrols last week. A special team arrived at the weekend to help bring out the troops and equipment.
