Interval training faster way to fitness - study

New research from the University of Canterbury shows high intensity exercise with intervals could halve the time it takes to get fit compared to traditional endurance training.

The study found that at the highest level, four 30-second bursts of exercise, with four-minute rest periods in between, could have the same affect on fitness levels as a 40 minute run.

Sport science expert Nick Draper said high intensity exercise with intervals boosts the metabolism higher than continuous exercise.

He said this form of exercise would work best when coupled with endurance training.
