A man has been denied bail after allegedly raping a Dutch tourist in Tuatapere.

Police say the man broke into the woman and her partner's vehicle at the camping ground on Thursday morning armed with a knife.

The 25-year-old appeared at Invercargill District Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody to reappear next Friday.

He has been charged with rape, but police say more charges will be laid as the investigation continues.

Detective Dave Nelson says assistance from the public and the identification of a number of items stolen from the couple led to the man's arrest.

The tourists have expressed their relief and gratitude to police and the community.

Meanwhile, the tourism industry is offering its support to the couple.

Cas Carter, from Tourism New Zealand, says the couple still wants to explore the country and the organisation may provide free accommodation or a rental car.
