Anniversary arrangements for Pacific War

4:38 pm on 7 November 2012

New Zealand World War II veterans who served in the Pacific are being invited to register their interest to attend the 70th anniversary commemorations in New Calendonia in April 2013.

The Pacific War began with the attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941 and ended with the Japanese surrender on 2 September 1945.

New Zealand sailors, soldiers and airmen were involved in the conflict.

Veterans must have served in the New Zealand armed forces between December 1941 - December 1945 and have been awarded or have been eligible for the Pacific Star to attend next year's commemorations in Noumea.

Veterans Affairs general manager Rick Ottaway says the commemorations will give Pacific War veterans the opportunity to be recognised.

A ceremony will also be held in New Zealand in May.
