Proposed Lord Mayor title scrapped

10:51 am on 9 November 2012

The proposal for a title of Lord Mayor will be scrapped from any submissions put forward to change Wellington's local government structure.

The term was suggested by an independent panel set up by Greater Wellington Regional Council and Porirua City Council.

A number of recommendations have been made by the panel, including a super council which sets rates and budgets and six local councils which look after community services.

Porirua mayor Nick Leggett says that while the panel proposed change for the region, the Lord Mayor title sounds as if it has come from colonial Britain - and the public has focused only on the title, not the role itself.

Mr Leggett says his council and the regional council have agreed to drop Lord Mayor from any submissions to the Local Government Commission.
