Media challenge to restrictions on Navtej Singh case

4:55 pm on 20 January 2009

Lawyers for several media companies, including Radio New Zealand, are attempting to overturn a ban on media coverage of a high-profile criminal trial in Auckland.

The case concerns the death of south Auckland liquor store owner Navtej Singh, who was shot and killed in June last year during an aggravated robbery.

A pre-trial depositions hearing against seven men charged in relation to his death began in Manukau District Court on Monday.

The judge, Semi Epati, placed a ban on media making public the names of the seven people, the charges they face, and the reasons for the suppression.

Lawyers for the media companies are challenging the restrictions in court on Tuesday.
