Kindy teachers union seeks exemption to job probation law

6:12 am on 22 January 2009

The union representing kindergarten teachers is seeking an exemption from the Government's 90-day probation period for new employees, saying it's hard enough already to attract people to some areas.

The New Zealand Educational Institute says it's an unfair rule, so it's seeking an exemption.

Under the new probation law, employers can dismiss someone on a worksite of less than 20 people within the first 90 days of employment, without giving a reason.

NZEI national secretary Paul Goulter says it's hard to attract teachers to hard-to-staff regions and the law is further discouragement.

He believes kindergarten teachers are the first to challenge the law.

Bargaining on a claim by the teachers is due to begin early next month.
