The Department of Conservation says it was worth spending more than $600,000 to rid Kapiti Island of three stoats.

DoC says the reserve, which is home to many rare native birds, is now stoat-free, after two years of trapping and monitoring since 2010.

Area manager Rob Stone said that while the two year campaign was expensive, keeping the island pest-free is a top priority.
