Police have confirmed an 82-year-old man has died and four others were injured in a car crash on State Highway 1 in south Otago on Tuesday afternoon.
Traffic has been diverted about 5km north of Clinton since the accident shortly after 1pm.
The man, who died at the scene, was a front-seat passenger in a car.
Three people who were passengers in a four-wheel-drive vehicle were taken by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver was uninjured.
The highway, near Kuriwao, remains closed but is expected to open later on Tuesday evening.
