The family of a New Zealander making a documentary in Gaza are relieved that he has reached safety in Cairo.

Roger Fowler, a member of pro-Palestinian group Kia ora Gaza, had been working with an international group recording the situation within the Gaza Strip.

He had been in the area for two weeks when the Israeli air strikes began.

Mr Fowler's son, Hone Fowler, says his father is now safe in the Egyptian capital after spending a frightening two days reporting on the bombardment for a British website.

"My dad was on the roof of the building on the walkie-talkie giving updates about who's being bombed where ... Early the next morning, he managed to get out via a brave taxi driver who sped him to the border in Rafa."

Mr Fowler says his father will remain in Cairo to investigate Egyptian support for Palestinians in Gaza.
