South Taranaki police are seeking witnesses to an apparent drag race that has left one person dead.
Seth David Woolston died on Friday night in a two-car crash on Fairfield Road on the outskirts of Hawera.
Hawera Sergeant Lincoln McCrea says both cars were travelling in the same direction and the possibility it was a drag race is being investigated.
He says speed and alcohol were involved, and it appears the person who died wasn't wearing a seatbelt.
The other driver had moderate injuries and has been discharged from hospital.
Sergeant McCrea says the message to not drink and drive is still not getting through.
The police want to speak with anyone who saw a dark blue Subaru and a light blue Holden Calais in the area after 7pm.
The death is Taranaki's 13th road fatality this year.
