Union demands answers over missing mail

A union is demanding a full report from New Zealand Post over how mail went missing in Queenstown for so long.

Tens of thousands of mail items were allegedly hoarded by a New Zealand Post worker.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council says it told the company in June this year that more than 1000 rates invoices appeared to have vanished.

But it says New Zealand Post did not pursue the matter, suggesting instead that it was the council's problem to fix.

The Postal Workers Union's southern district president, John Maynard, says the company has some explaining to do.

A 32-year-old New Zealand Post worker will appear in court in December charged with various theft offences.
