Blue marlin speared for record

An teenage fisherman believes he is the first person to speargun a blue marlin in New Zealand waters.

Nick Dobbyn, 18, from Auckland, battled the 213kg marlin for more than two hours while taking part in a game fishing tournament off Great Barrier Island last weekend.

He says quite a few striped marlins have been shot before in New Zealand but this is the first blue one.

Mr Dobbyn says he thinks it is a record, but it depends on the way the judges view how he killed it.

He says when he first told his mum what he had done she said he was "bloody mad", but she is proud of him now.
