Transgender offender seeking home detention

6:25 pm on 23 November 2012

A judge has ordered a further report on a transgender woman who does not want to be sent to a men's prison.

Glen Lawrence Cooper has admitted wounding with intent to injure after she hit a man on the head with a wine bottle in an argument in January this year.

Cooper's lawyer Kelly Ellis has asked for a sentence of home detention, saying her client is at serious risk while locked up with men.

In the Whangarei District Court on Friday, Judge Duncan Harvey deferred sentencing after Ms Ellis said she had been unable to obtain a psychiatrist's report in time for the hearing.

The judge said he was looking for an excuse not to send Cooper back to jail and made an order for a full psychiatric report.

However he declined bail, saying Cooper's pre-sentencing report showed a complete lack of remorse and no intention of apologising.
