Dunedin City Council wants the Transport Agency to make urgent safety improvements for cyclists.

The decision was made at an extraordinary council meeting to discuss cycle safety held behind closed doors on Tuesday.

Otago University lecturer Dr Li Hong He was killed last week when he was hit by a truck after being knocked from his bike on a section of State Highway 1 that passes through the city.

The council resolved to write to the Transport Agency, which is responsible for state highways, seeking urgent interventions to improve cycle safety especially on the city's one-way system.

It also wants a longer term plan to improve cyclist and pedestrian safety.
