Tasers for Waitemata, Counties Manukau police

2:42 pm on 2 February 2009

Taser stun guns are now available for use by general police officers in areas where they were trialled for a year.

The reintroduction began last December, but only for selected armed offenders squad members in Wellington and Auckland.

Now general officers in the trial districts of Waitemata and Counties Manukau will begin training in the use of the weapons.

Superintendent John Rivers said tasers will not be routinely carried by officers and any officer wishing to take them on a call-out will need a supervisor's permission.
