Cricket venue appears likely to go ahead

A controversial proposal to develop an international cricket venue at Hagley Oval in Christchurch looks set to go ahead after the city council sought clarification on whether it was considered an anchor project in the city's recovery plan.

Canterbury Cricket wants to turn Hagley Oval into a first class cricket venue for international matches but the move has been opposed by some who want the park preserved.

A cricket venue was included in the recovery plan in July and city councillors have been seeking clarification from officials since, on whether the council was obliged to proceed with the venue.

The council's general manager community services, Michael Aitken, says in order for it to proceed, Canterbury Cricket has to obtain resource consent for the pavilion, light towers and the embankment.

The council will discuss the proposal on Thursday.
