A New Zealand soldier serving in Afghanistan has been injured in an accident at a firing range.

The soldier is serving with the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamyan province.

The Defence Force says he was hit in the eye with what might have been a ricocheting bullet on Monday.

It is believed the soldier was wearing protective eyewear. He has been flown to Bagram Air Base for surgery where he is in a stable condition and will be taken to a military hospital in Germany for further treatment.

Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman says he was informed the soldier has a minor eye injury.

The soldier's family have been informed about the incident, which is being investigated.
