Kohanga Reo ask for select committee support

12:31 pm on 5 December 2012

The Kohanga Reo National Trust has asked MPs for help in getting the Government to act on the results of a Waitangi Tribunal report published earlier this year.

The tribunal called for extra funding for the pre-schools and significant policy changes after finding they have been harmed by the Crown.

The trust on Wednesday urged Parliament's education and science select committee to unanimously agree that the tribunal's recommendations should be adopted as soon as possible.

The trust says without urgent help, one third of kohanga reo will be forced to close within the next two years.
