A woman has been taken to hospital after being impaled on a fence in central Auckland.

The Fire Service were called to the Pitt Street Methodist Church shortly after 5am on Thursday to help free the woman, who had been trying to climb over the metal fence.

Auckland central fire station senior station officer Sulu Devoe said firefighters had to use power tools to cut her free.

He said two metal spikes were about 7 centimetres into the woman's right thigh, causing her severe pain.

She was given pain-relief medication at the scene by ambulance staff and taken to Auckland Hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.
