5:34 am on 8 February 2009

An Air New Zealand 747 aircraft bound for Los Angeles made a successful emergency landing at Auckland International Airport on Saturday night.

The Fire Service says the Boeing 747-400, with 365 people on board, had reported a hydraulic problem.

It landed safely at Auckland Airport just before 9pm.

The plane took off about an hour and a half earlier, but turned back to Auckland, dumping fuel en route.

Passenger David Duignan from Campbell's Bay, Auckland, says the pilot told passengers a light had indicated the landing gear should not be raised

He says the aircraft flew at low altitude for an hour while fuel was dumped.

Fire crews were on standby when the plane landed.

Mr Duignan says the passengers applauded when they touched down safely.
