Figures from a police operation over the weekend show a rise in the number of reported arrests and assaults compared with the previous year.

More than 1500 police were involved in Operation Unite in New Zealand and Australia.

In New Zealand, the blitz resulted in 448 arrests and 170 alcohol related assaults.

Comparable figures for last year's operation were 340 arrests and 94 assaults.

Police this year also reported 135 licence breaches, and 364 drink drive offences.

Superintendent Carey Griffiths said police will continue to target alcohol-related offending, particularly in the lead-up to the festive season.
