Decision to shut down Kapiti bar applauded

A Kapiti community leader is applauding a decision by the Liquor Licensing Authority to shut down a notorious bar near where two young men were killed earlier this year.

Police and many locals told a recent authority hearing that Retro Bar was central to increasing drunken violence on weekends.

lzak Millanta died in August and Sean Strongman-Lintern in September after being attacked in car parks at the Kapiti Lights Complex.

District councillor K Gurunathan says Retro was the only bar open in the area after 1am and he's pleased its licence hasn't been renewed.

He says people come there already loaded up and then drink both in the bar and outside in the carpark.

Mr Gurunathan says police have maintained a heavy presence in the area since the deaths and he hopes that continues.
