A survey shows there has been an increase in New Zealanders visiting the country's biggest city, Auckland.

Statistics New Zealand's commercial accommodation monitor shows there was a nearly 10% increase in domestic visitors in September and October.

That's compared with the same period last year, when the city hosted the Rugby World Cup.

Jason Hill, spokesperson of Auckland's event agency, Ateed, says the results are a pleasant surprise.

He says there are a range of reasons why there was a rise in domestic visitors such as the Mary Poppins musical and the Triathlon World Championships Grand Final.
