NZ to assist relief efforts in Fiji

12:01 pm on 18 December 2012

New Zealand will assist with immediate relief efforts in Fiji following Cyclone Evan.

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said New Zealand will make $50,000 immediately available as a first step for responding to specific requests.

Tarpaulins, water containers, generators and chainsaw packs are on the way to Fiji on commercial flights and a contribution of $170,000 to the Fiji Red Cross will help it to replenish supplies.

Mr McCully said the Government is also looking at further funding for New Zealand-based non-government organisations with supplies already in Fiji.
