Police have released the names of the family of five found dead this afternoon following a crash near Tokoroa.

It appears the family's car left State Highway 32 near Whakamaru and struck a tree.

The car was being driven by Lisa Crowley, 23 and her partner, Richard Melling, 37, was the front seat passenger.

In the back seat sat Jordan Melling, 11, Brody Crowley, 2 and a three-week old boy, yet to be named.

Police say it is not clear when the crash happened, but the family were last seen near their home in Whakamaru on Sunday evening.

The car was found by forestry contractors on Tuesday afternoon.

In the second crash two Indian tourists were killed when their car collided with a truck.
