The long-serving chief executive of Wellington City Council has lost his job after councillors decided not to renew his contract.
Garry Poole has led the council since 1997, but his job was re-advertised following his annual review in August.
A council spokesperson has confirmed Mr Poole announced the decision in an emailed statement to staff on Thursday.
At a closed-door council meeting on Wednesday night, councillors voted 9 to 6 not to reappoint him to the $420,000 job.
Mr Poole's current contract finishes in March.
