Deep low moves south for Christmas

11:16 pm on 24 December 2012

Heavy rain easing in Northland as former Cyclone Evan begins to make its way down the country.

The deep low lies just north of Cape Reinga and is now moving south towards the central North Island.

But the severe weather warnings for Northland, Auckland, and the Coromandel have been downgraded as rain there begins to ease.

Coromandel civil defence controller Gary Talbot says there have been no issues with flooding or slips, but he is still urging motorists to take care on dirt roads in the region.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are due over Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, and Taupo, with small hail and wind gusts of up to 90kmh.

The MetService says there's a possibility of flooding and slips, and people are being urged to take care close to streams and rivers.
