A Northland man has been arrested after the police say he tried to incite a crowd in Hamilton by chanting "Dargaville", referring to a serious assault on two police officers on Christmas Day.

Two police officers are recovering after the attack in the Northland town on Christmas Day. One was beaten unconscious and the other suffered injuries.

The 21-year-old man began shouting as officers carried out a check at a Victoria Street bar on Thursday night, police say.

They said he was wanted in relation to an aggravated robbery in Dargaville and was due to appear in court on Friday to face charges.

The man was drunk and his comments were stupid and inflammatory, police say.
