Mayor calls meeting over odour

11:49 am on 31 December 2012

Whanganui Mayor Annette Main hopes to hold a meeting on Monday with businesses in a bid to reduce a foul odour coming from the city's wastewater treatment plant.

A strong stench has been emanating for more than a week now from the sewerage system which is based to the south of the city in Kaitoke. If the wind blows from the south-west, the smell can become unbearable.

Ms Main said she wants to get an idea of the amount of wastewater that will be fed into the treatment plant over the next seven days.

She said that in a number of cases, amounts in the wastewater system have exceeded consents.

Ms Main ascknowledged it's a tough time of the year to organise a meeting because many people are out of town on holiday.
