''Tweet beat" held by police

6:44 am on 1 January 2013

Around 45,000 people followed a "tweet beat" by police in Bay of Plenty on Monday night.

The virtual patrol ran for seven hours until 2am on Tuesday with tweets and real-time updates about various incidents police attended around Tauranga and Mt Maunganui.

The idea behind the twitter feed was to provide a snapshot of the work police do on New Year's Eve and to encourage safe celebrations.

Police said the majority of callouts were for drunken disorder and drink driving. There were also 'way too many' intoxicated teenagers.

By the end of the ''tweet beat'', there were 47arrests in western Bay, 27 in Rotorua, 13 in Taupo and four in eastern Bay.

Officers in other parts of the country are also reporting a busy night, with the number of arrests still being tallied.
