MetService has re-issued a warning of severe weather for parts of the South Island and the lower North Island.
A severe warning is in place for Fiordland, Westland and the headwaters of Otago and Canterbury which can expect heavy rainfall.
Inland areas of Otago and Canterbury will have severe gales, as will Marlborough, Wellington and southern Wairarapa especially in exposed places.
Heavy rain is expected in Buller and northwest Nelson during most of Wednesday.
