Police are going door-to-door in a Coromandel resort in the hope of finding New Year's Eve revellers with information about an assault that put a holiday-maker in intensive care.
A 64-year-old New Zealand man, who now lives in Australia, was stabbed in the head and neck at 1am on New Year's morning after coming across a man near his caravan alongside Waihi Beach Road.
Detective Inspector Karl Thornton of the Waikato CIB says the man stabbed the holiday-maker after being told to leave.
The 64-year-old is now fighting for his life in Waikato Hospital.
A cordon is still in place at the scene as the police continue their investigation.
Police are also canvassing the area in the hope of finding revellers who may have seen something around 1am, the time of the attack.
