Glaciers still open despite highway closure

The Glacier Country Tourism Group says despite the road closure of State Highway 6 north of Harihari both the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers are still open for tourists to visit.

The Transport Agency says the highway on the West Coast of the South Island should be reopened on Tuesday if the weather improves and the flooded Wanganui River can be diverted.

The river washed away 40 metres of road leading to a one-lane bridge this week, forcing travellers to make lengthy detours.

The tourism group's chairperson, Rob Jewell, says several road closures because of bad weather earlier in the week have given rise to some confusion as to where tourists can and can't go.

Mr Jewell says while the glaciers can't be approached from Hokitika in the north, the road from Wanaka in the south through the Haast is open.

"We're open for business as usual, there's some great activities and attractions here ... just come and experience it - it's a great place."
