Palmerston North police say search and rescue efforts for a man who went missing while swimming at a beach on Saturday were been called off when darkness fell and will resume on Sunday.

A 27-year-old Feilding man was swimming with his partner and friends at Himitangi Beach at about 2.30pm when he got out of his depth and drifted from the group.

Surf live savers from Himatangi, Foxton and Kapiti, the Manawatu Coast Guard and the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter as well as a police search and rescue team were used to try find the man.

Sergeant Andy Brooke says the signs are ominous for the man and officers from the Police Dive Squad are scheduled to arrive tomorrow to take part in the search.
