Police have cordoned off roads around the BP petrol station at the intersection of Tawa Street and Main Road.
A police communications spokesperson says the package was reported to police at twenty-to-ten last night.
He says the package looks out of character and the specialist team is examining it to see what it's dealing with.
He says the surrounding streets, which are residential, have been cordoned off as a precautionary measure.
