Turia lashes out at Laws over city's spelling

4:38 pm on 25 February 2009

Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws does not understand history, says Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia.

Local hapu Te Runanga o Tupoho wants the Geographic Board to add an "h" to Wanganui's spelling, but Mr Laws says the city's name is not Maori and should not have its spelling changed.

On Tuesday, Wanganui district councillors voted eight to five against the change.

But Ms Turia says Wanganui was always named after the river, and Mr Laws is being arrogant to assert otherwise.
