School with two pupils now closed

A West Coast school with two pupils is now closed. In December, the axe fell on Jacobs River School, which is between Fox Glacier and Haast.

The two pupils who were at the school and a third who was due to start in April, were given the choice of homeschooling, Correspondence School or attending Fox Glacier School.

But their parents say they are unable to afford the cost of the travel there.

They estimate the 60km - 80km round trip to Fox Glacier, twice per day, would cost about $12,000 per year.

The Ministry of Education has offered $4.72 per day transport allowance.
