Two underage drivers crash into each other

5:37 pm on 9 January 2013

Police in Waikato are urging parents to reconsider children's access to family vehicles after two under-age sisters were injured when the cars they were driving collided.

Inspector Marcus Lynam says police received a 111 call on Monday from a motorist nearly hit by a car whose driver couldn't see over the steering wheel.

A short time later the same vehicle collided with another car coming out of a driveway.

It turned out the first driver was 12-years-old and the other driver was her 14-year-old sister.

Mr Lynam says the younger girl had taken the car out for a drive and her older sister began worrying and went in search of her.

Both girls were taken to Waikato Hospital and both cars were extensively damaged.

Mr Lynam says parents should re-evaluate their children's access to vehicles and discuss the risks with them.

He says it is too early to say what, if any, charges the two girls may face.
