An inquest into the deaths of two men on a motorcycle at an accident blackspot has found they died trying to escape police detection.

Friends Steven Gorrie and Makoto Izumi died instantly when their bike crossed the centre line on State Highway One near Warkworth in April 2010, hitting a car head-on.

A police officer clocked the powerful Suzuki motorbike speeding.

Coroner Brandt Shortland said in his report released on Wednesday the bike reached speeds of up to 162 kilometres an hour as it accelerated away.

Mr Gorrie, the driver, was on a learner's licence that prohibited him from carrying passengers or riding a bike more than 250cc.

Mr Gorrie was 39 and Mr Izumi 38.

An Independent Police Conduct Authority report found the officer involved was not at fault.
