Motorway drunk arrested after going wrong way

A drunk man who stole a taxi and drove it the wrong way up northwestern motorway in Auckland at about midnight on Wednesday has been arrested.

Police said the man had hired the taxi and stole it from the driver part way through the journey.

Inspector Ian Brooker said hewas pursued along the motorway where he reached speeds of up to 130km per hour.

The drive then took an on ramp on to the other side of the motorway, briefly heading in the wrong direction before abandoning the car.

He was found by the police dog squad a short time later.
