Roof lifted by wind gusts

Strong wind gusts in Kaikoura on Thursday morning lifted a roof off a garage, sending it flying through and severing powerlines.

Electricity was cut to houses along Beach Road, but has now been restored.

Police said the incident happened at about 9am and the roof has since been returned to its owner.

Strong winds also brought down power lines in rural parts of Canterbury, causing outages to about 100 households.

A power pole in the Duvauchelle area was damaged, but power has been restored to most of the area except Okains Bay.

Orion said it expects to have power restored soon.
