Trains stopped after pilot warns of river surge

7:10 pm on 10 January 2013

Some trains in Canterbury had to be stopped on Thursday after a pilot alerted police to a mass of water flowing down the Waimakariri River.

The large surge of water was seen moving down the river just before 6pm. Police say it was from bank to bank as it moved out to sea.

Trains were held back while the surge went through, and authorities are checking the bridge before starting rail traffic again.

No roads have been affected.
